If you think that a water purifier will ensure pure and clean water for you then think twice because an NGO has put a question mark on the safety of purifiers after a study.
Water purifiers are making way in every Indian home seeing the quality of potable water n India but the NGO, Healthy You Foundation, states that there are no standards that are to be met by these purifiers like the BIS standards that are to be met by producers of packaged drinking water and natural mineral water.
In countries like the USA, Australia and European nations, regulatory bodies for monitoring safety of all types of drinking water exist but they are nowhere in India.
S Krishnan, President of Healthy You Foundation said, "There is a great risk of formation of disinfection by-products, even in the most commonly used disinfectant - Chlorine. It can lead to adverse health effects in the long run, ranging from metabolic disorders to renal failure and cancer".
Safety of Storage water purifiers was a study carried out by consumer expert Bejon Mishra, who stated that a lot of producers paid no attention on quality products as no one was watching them.
A major problem exists in chemical based purifiers which use chemicals like Trichlorocyanuric acid (TCCA), nano silver, iodine and bromine as they are hazardous.
