A recent study at the German Institute for Nutritional Research in Potsdam-Rehbrücke has reported that the perimeter of waist can reveal the diabetes status of a person.
At present, BMI is the criteria for deciding the chances of developing diabetes. Generally, when BMI measures increases more than 25 points, doctors take waist perimeter into the consideration.
The study has found that even a person with low BMI but a big waist is equally prone to develop the risk of diabetes risk.
This study has suggested that waist perimeter is a more efficient factor for measuring the diabetes risks in normal and underweight people, as a major amount of subcutaneous fat is in the waist.
It is known that there is a tissue called visceral fat, which acts as a catalyst in the development of diabetes. These Visceral tissues are more active than the non- visceral tissue.
Till date, doctors have not been able to find the best method to measure the visceral fat around the waist.
The study published in the Deutsches Arzteblatt International will enable doctors to issue some guideline for the patients so that they can prevent the disease in the early stages only.
The World Health Organization has expected that the diabetes patients will increase twice by the year 2030.
