Marsden Point refinery is a boon for the people of New Zealand. It was inaugurated by Mr. Gerry Brownlee, the Minister of Energy and Resources. A sum of $190 million has been spent on its development by the New Zealand Refining Company, as told by sources. It took five years to get completed.
The capacity of the refinery has been upgraded by 15%, which now produces 135,000 barrels per day. Other alterations include heat exchangers, bigger vessels, furnaces pumps and pipe works that will fasten the processes and produce more output. It now accounts for 80% of fuel products of the total usage of diesel, petrol and jet fuel in New Zealand. It has made the nation more self-dependent for fuel-products.
Ken Rivers, NZRC Chief Executive stated that the expansion will enable the nation to meet its transport fuel supply efficiently. The products, the refinery is producing is of the best quality. It will also add to the benefit of the economy. The demand for fuel products will rise in the next 20 to 30 years and now the refinery has the potential to meet this excess demand.
Rivers further added that in order to complete this project in time, everyone's co-operation is needed.
