Prescription drug abuse leaps ahead

Prescription drug abuse leaps aheadPrescription drug abuse is taking a large form in the US and White House study report states that between 1998 and 2008 there has been an increase of about 400 per cent in substance abuse treatment admissions.

This initiates a need for a regulation that can look into this problem as Americans have become more inclined to ever-more-powerful and addictive prescription drugs.

Pamela Hyde, administrator of The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, felt that being the second most prevalent form of drug abuse in the US, the non-medical use of prescription pain relievers has tragic consequences. They often lead you to emergency departments and substance abuse treatment centers.

Reports say that from 22 millions in 1994 to 2003, the number of prescriptions for controlled substances reached 354 million. There was a significant rise in the number of admissions for misuse of prescription painkillers from about
40,000 to 300,000 from 1994 in 2008.

Dr Glaser stated, “There has been a strong push among doctors in recent years to be more aggressive in addressing pain. This has led to the dramatic increase in opiates such as morphine, but the problem is there hasn’t been a whole lot of science to go along with that.”
