Doctors find the youngest donor in a 4-day-old baby

organ-donorThis has happened for the first time in India when doctors, on Tuesday, in a hospital of a city took organs from a girl who was just 4 days old. The baby, whose eyes and heart valves were taken, became the youngest organ donor ever, for India.

On the 8th of July at Durgabai Deshmukh Hospital, the child was born prematurely to a couple who stays in Mahbubnagar, Hymavathi, the mother is a school teacher and Kishore Kumar, the father is a revenue inspector. For the first two days the infant was normal, but after that she started having complications and was put on ventilator. The parents were informed about the bleak chances of survival of their child by the doctors.. On July 12, the child was declared by the doctors as brain dead.

Though the parents were lamenting the loss of their child, the baby girl’s uncle raised the subject of organ donation. He was the person to have taken the initiative of asking Mohan Foundation whether the child’s organ, if donated, would come of use. The hospital authority took the consent from the family and the baby was shifted to another hospital called Innova located in Secunderabad, where her eyes and heart valves were retrieved.

According to specialist this kind of donation is a rarity as the small sized valves and eyes retrieved from the child are difficult to get. So the donation is unique even if the child’s age is not taken into consideration. Her heart valves can now be used for children who has underdeveloped heart valves or who does not have heart valves. Doctors said the valves retrieved from the child were being sterilized and stored and parents of children who were born with heart defects were being contacted find out if they opted for valve transplant for their kids.
