Bonnie McCracken is lucky that she will a decreased risk of cancer in her life. This month old baby’s mother, grandmother and great grandmother carry the BRCA1 gene mutation which is associated with ovarian and breast cancer.

Around 24 women in the extensive family have suffered from breast or ovarian cancer and half of them have succumbed to this deadly disease. Some of these women were barely in their 30’s.

Bony’s mother, Krystal Barter, said that their lineage looks like a battleground. She disclosed that every year, they get the news of somebody’s death within the family.

Ms. Barter and her husband, Chris, wanted that their daughter should be free of the BRCA1 gene. Therefore, they went in for IVF. In this technique genetic diagnosis was done before the implantation of the embryo. However, last year Ms. Barter suddenly got pregnant during a break of treatment.

There are chances that she may have the defective gene but her mother is optimistic that her future will be different. She said that she dreams of the day that Bonnie will visit the doctor to get vaccinated against cancer.

In the year 2008, Ms. Barter had a precautionary double-mastectomy. She will now have her fallopian tubes removed and finally she also plans to get her ovaries removed.
