BMA Chief Warned Foreign Doctors to Acquire Essential Language Skills

BMA Chief Warned Foreign Doctors to Acquire Essential Language SkillsAccording to the Head of the British Medical Association, foreign doctors working in the UK must acquire the essential language skills and be susceptible to the same regulation as British doctors. A German visiting doctor working his first shift in Britain gave an overdose to a pensioner David Gray that led to his death.

Dr. Hamish Meldrum, the Chairman of the BMA sympathized for his family and shared that such tragedies should be stopped from occurring.

While delivering a speech on the opening day of the BMA's annual conference in Brighton, Meldrum said, “We must ensure that the doctors who treat our patients are competent to do so, that they have the necessary language skills, and that they are subject to the same regulation as UK doctors”.

The 65 year old, Daniel Ubani gave a tenfold overdose of diamorphine, a painkiller, to Gray. His name was struck off the medical register 10 days ago. Though, the German regulatory authorities have been contacted by GMC, Ubani has been convicted in Germany for causing Gray's death due to carelessness.

He added that it is unacceptable that poorly trained and badly regulated doctors whose knowledge of English is about as good as his knowledge of Chinese, to be able to practice uncontested in the UK. The panel warned that if Ubani is left free to practice, he could make similar errors again.
