Nucleus 5 Cochlear Implant: First of Its Kind on Dubai Lad

A two and a half year old boy from Dubai went through the Nucleus 5 cochlear implant on Friday morning at the KKR ENT Hospital, which is the first of its kind in TN and the third such in the nation.

According to Dr. Ravi Ramalingam, who carried out the one-and-a-half-hour operation with a squad, said, the Nucleus 5 implant is 30% thinner and 2% stronger than any other implant that is obtainable in the present day.

This implant will impersonate natural hearing and looks realistic. All the cochlear implants are imported from overseas.

The Nucleus implant has also been imported from Australia and the operation cost Rs. 9.9 lakh.

The victory of any cochlear implant depended on the auditory verbal rehabilitation therapy, which is offered after the surgery.

A cochlear implant would have the finest consequence, when done prior a child attains the age of 4, he added.

In a research carried out by the KKR ENT Hospital along with the World Health Organization last year, it was found that three out of every thousand infant born in India suffer from severe level of impaired hearing, which would finally need cochlear implantation.

Dr. Ravi Ramalingam made a note that although there were 1 million hearing impaired in India, merely 6,000 implants have been carried out up to now, and in Tamil Nadu, approximately 500.
