Millions of football fans who are enjoying the ongoing football World Cup are consuming more than recommended levels of salt. Most of people enjoying barbecues are consuming a lot of salt. A typical barbeque that has burgers, sausages, bacon, dips and crisps contains almost two times more salt than the recommended salt limit by health experts.
It is stressed that high levels of salt in diet can lead to increased blood pressure, apart from increasing the risk for a stroke, heart attack and can also lead to nearly death.
UK's Food Standards Agency is increasing pressure on supermarkets and food chains to clearly label the amount on salt in their food and also to alter those recipes, where a lot of salt is used.
A leading health advocacy group, Consensus Action of Salt and Health (CASH) has argued that more action is needed and it is already pressing the authorities to take steps to remedy the situation.
It analyzed a typical barbecue meal and found that it contains almost twice the amount of salt that is recommended daily for an adult.
It also found that a shopping basket of barbecue products from Tesco, Asda and Morrison's contained more than the recommended levels of salt.
The agency pointed that healthier options existed from places like Birds Eye and the Co-op. The products of Sainsbury's also contained lesser amount of salt.
