It has been declared by the health advisors of Government that a cheap twice-yearly jab for the treatment of osteoporosis could be soon available on the National Institute of Health.
The Government health advisers of National Institute of Health and Clinical Excellence has said that women after menopause are more prone to the fracture of bones, so they should be treated with the drug denosumab, if other treatments are inappropriate.
In the trials of drug, it has been shown that it cuts the number of spine and hip fractures in women and also helps in the regeneration of bones. Having jab twice in a year will lead to a 40% lower hip fracture risk, a 70 % lower risk of spinal fractures and 20% reduction in the risk of other broken bones.
The women who cannot go for usual treatment in which bisphosphonate drugs are used can now take the benefit from the decision of Government. Though, the directions will not be confirmed for some weeks.
Denosumab start its work by reducing the breakdown of bones and then it raises bone mass and strength. The immune systems of patients also get stimulated to obstruct the production of protein called rank ligand, which activates the breakdown of bone strength.
