Contribution of Social Media to Encourage Young Blood Donors

Blood-DonorsThe Lancet, a British Journal, in its edition on June 19th has urged for taking the help if social media to encourage blood donors and fill the blood banks in the country. June 14th was celebrated as the World Blood Donor Day and the New Blood for the world, which is a WHO’s campaign was launched.

The campaign hopes to encourage a new generation if idealistic blood donors who would form a pool to provide the safest possible blood without being paid for it. This could be used whenever and wherever blood is required to save a life. Lancet has questioned if the young people will donate blood in greater numbers by rising up to the challenge. The Lancet also suggested that health professionals should inspire younger patients to come forward for blood donation camps based in universities, along with Google helping out with free advertisements for organizations of blood donation.

The mismatch that exists between supply and demand could be eliminated if every person campaigns about blood donation on the Facebook wall and recruits other friends too, leading to blood reaching the places where it is needed the most, according to the Lancet.   You are eligible for blood donation if you are young and haven’t had unprotected sex or a tattoo piercing recently. Many factors like secual orientation, places visited, medications or electrolysis could decide whether your blood is ok to be donated. One can contact the local office of Red Cross to find out what the requirements for a blood donor are.  People can also save many children and mothers through urging their twitter followers to donate blood. This is of great importance especially to those who are anemic. Lancet also urges one to spread the news on Facebook.
