Allergy sufferers could now see a hopeful ‘eating out’ as a low allergy is being developed.
The peanuts are being developed by researchers of the agricultural department in the untied states. They claim that the peanuts are naturally bred with no genetic modifications and that bear a minute risk to the allergy sufferers. If the experiments prove successful, the peanuts would go out to sale in supermarkets and would also be used by manufacturers of food to cut risks that affect lines of production.
These nuts could also be used by restaurants to reduce the customers’ risks especially those who have a nut allergy and are scared to eat out.
The key proteins that trigger the allergy have been removed or reduced by the US team. This is done with no genetic modification but by cross breeding conventionally.
Allergies to peanuts are very common which result in breathing problems. But serious cases can lead to anaphylactic shock that could prove to be life threatening.
These low allergy peanuts are developed with the help of funds from the department of the agriculture but this development is still in its preliminary stage. If the experiments that would be conducted further are successful, they could reduce risks of the production lines.
Prof. Soheila Maleki presented the findings at the European academy of allergy and clinical immunology.
She mentioned that if the low energy peanuts were taken from childhood, it would reduce the allergy towards peanuts at adulthood.
"And people that are already allergic would need to have a much higher dose before they suffered a reaction. In the case of accidental ingestion, there would be much less of a reaction.” she said.
