On Friday, Buddhist followers in Malaysia, from all spheres of life, commemorated Vesak Day in the spirit of 1Malaysia, offering prayers and alms.
Vesak Day is said to be the most significant and holy day for Buddhists across the globe who celebrate the day of the birth, enlightenment and the passing of Gautama Buddha.
In Kuala Lumpur, Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak and wife, Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor joined in massive number of devotees who observed the sacred day at the Buddhist Maha Vihara in Brickfields.
Najib and Rosmah's advent at 9.30am was welcomed by Chief High Priest of Malaysia, most respected, K. Dhammaratana Thera and a concert group, which symbolized the multi-cultural traditions in the nation.
Several Cabinet Ministers together with Health Minister, Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai, Transport Minister, Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat, Deputy Information Communication and Culture Minister in addition to delegates from other beliefs and foreign VIPs also joined in the festivity.
Famous British Chef, Gordon Ramsey was also called on to prepare a special vegetarian lunch for the important persons.
Various programs were also designed at the temple, comprising blood donation, giving out of free vegetarian food, exhibition, group prayers and march in the city during the evening.
