At the Central Park for the 12th annual Relay for Life of the Santa Clarita Valley, more than 4,000 volunteers, including family and friends of people who have survived or died from cancer, came down.
One of the cancer survivors to walk at the event was Heather Warrick.
The rally started at 9 a. m. on Saturday and ends today at 9 a. m. The money collected by over 130 teams that will walk around the park for hours during the event, will be used for treatment, research and support of people diagnosed with cancer by the American Cancer Society.
An American Cancer Society website for the event states that the SCV Relay for Life is the largest in Southern California and the third largest in the state.
According to Stacy Kupfer, the event's team-captain coordinator, the vent had last year raised more than $560,000 and this year the organizers hoped to raise $600,000, which would be the most the SCV Relay has ever raised.
Kupfer added, "Community events like this are a way to support people who have been affected by cancer. There's a lot of power in that."
Some local groups that took part in the relay were West Ranch High School, Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital, Saugus High School, Canyon High School, Grace Baptist Church, and Blessed Kateri Tekakwitha Catholic Parish.
