An independent study found, millions of seniors signed up for popular Medicine Advantage insurance plans don’t get the best quality. According to the ratings available on Medicare’s website, assign one to five starts for quality, with one signifying poor performance and five excellent.
It may noted that about 11 million seniors are signed up , nearly one fourth of Medicare recipients and for years, private plans have enjoyed generous payments from the government. The government’s benevolence enabled most plans to offer lower out of pocket costs and extra benefits and currently it averages 9 percent more than the cost of care in traditional Medicare.
Peter Ashkenaz , the Medicare spokesman, said , “By aligning payment with quality, the new legislation will drive improvements in quality across all plans," and according to several measures , including customer service, prevention and medical care for people with chronic health problems. While spokesman for America’s Health Insurance Plans said, “Some of the criteria are not objective, meaning that health plans may not be able to move up in the ratings,". The Avalere study has raised questions about Medicare’s rating system with the insurance industry not challenging the study.
