The words, “CELEBRATE, REMEMBER, FIGHT BACK” decorate every poster and sign advertising Case Western Reserve University’s 3rd Annual Relay for Life . The Relay which took place at he Village at 115 track, had 1096 participants raised over $76,000 for the event just short of Relay’s $85,000 goal . It may be noted that this year, the inclement weather provided some nervous excitement as the wind caused problems with some of the luminary bags.
Lauren Kwasniewski, the Luminaria chair for Relay for Life told the story of her fight with cancer during the ceremony along with Ehlert who was also diagnosed with cancer 10 years ago. Ehlert in speech said, “I'm really proud to talk about it. I hope to be that one person that changes a life. Cancer touches everyone.” It may be noted that Kathy Ehlert is a CWRU senior and cancer survivor. Lauren also said, “We decided that she was a good choice. Ehlert's experience was only part of the reason she was chosen to speak. Her involvement on campus and her age were also a big part of the decision. "It brings it close to home for all of us on campus”.
It may be noted that the main event closes out a year’s’ worth of fundraising and one last chance for everyone to show their support for the American Cancer Society. Jarzombek, during her time on the Local American Cancer Society Board said, “There is the opportunity to honor the survivors and to memorialize the ones we lost to the disease.
It just really gives you the whole feel of everything. We have so many programs that receive funds through the American Cancer Society where a patient can get help”.
