Pill-popping obsession in OZ

living-on-pillsIt seems that people in OZ are living on pills as reports say that people here are consuming 40 million pills per day.

This pill-popping obsession is costing OZ $14.2 billion every year. This raises an important question that are people popping in these pills for maintaining their health that expresses resorting to pills rather than maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

Every year there are 196 million prescriptions for subsidized medicines and about 300 million packets of pills are purchased apart from this by Australians.

There has been a 37 per cent rise in pill popping in the past 17 years.

Australian Medical Association vice president, GP and former Pharmaceutical Benefits Advisory Committee member Dr Steve Hambleton said, "There has been an explosion in the number of people who are diabetic and when you're diagnosed as diabetic you go from no pills to four pills overnight."

He added that people were resorting to pills because of drug companies advertising for medicines to treat smoking and diabetes.

He stated, "I think we have to go back to good old-fashioned focus on lifestyle."
