UAE lawmakers for slashing call rates

UAE lawmakers for slashing call ratesThe UAE lawmakers have asked for the need of immediate reduction in call charges by the telecom operators operating in the country. The members of the Federal National Council pulled Telecom Regulatory Authority of the country for its failure to bring competition in the telecom market despite having enough scope for decline.

Currently, there are two telecom operators namely Etisalat and Du offering telecom services in the country. However, lack of competition has been making customers to pay more to avail the services. Du, which started its operations in 2007 in UAE, was made to offer services in a limited region around Dubai while Etisalat is still enjoying monopoly in the remaining parts of the country.

There is a stern need for the TRA for expediting competition in the telecom market and thus saving the interests of the customers. The body should approve the new schemes by operators before their introduction in the market.

The country, having a significant portion of expatriate population, is among the most expensive countries in the World in terms of offering national and international calls.
