Wednesday saw over 300 reporters for Islam Online camping out in their Cairo offices in protest. The alleged efforts by the management in Qatar to assume editorial control of the Islamic website were protest against on Wednesday by over 300 reporters for Islam Online, who camped out in their Cairo offices.
It was popular exiled Egyptian cleric Yusef al-Qardawi, who found the Qatari-based website, which has its editorial offices in Egypt and posts news items as well as sections on Islamic lifestyle and advice from clerics.
On Tuesday, following when journalists were forbidden from posting reports on the website, the protest commenced.
Hisham Gafar, an Islam Online reporter put the blame on the appointment of a new board of directors for Qatar's Al-Balagh Foundation, which owns the website, and said they were meddling in editorial decisions.
The protestors aimed at asking for editorial independence, and if that were not possible, severance packages.
Other reporters, who asked for obscurity, said the new board wanted the site to kowtow to a firm explanation of Islam while avoiding politics, and they had threatened to close down the Egypt office.
