Skype, a service that offers voice data and video communication over internet, is still available in some parts of the country though it is officially banned in the UAE. People, having DU internet connections are still enjoying the service by making calls to PC using internet. However, the users with Etisalat connection failed to download and use the services as it has been blocked officially by the company after government orders.
It should be recalled that Skype does not have license from the TRA, the apex telecom regulatory body of the country. Du had earlier said that its subscribers cannot make PC-to-PC calls like other telecom operators of the country which banned the use of Skype over two years ago.
TRA still seems confused over the situation and is seemingly facing difficulties for completely banning the service despite repeated warnings over its unofficial use. The TRA says, "Any person using VoIP Services which are not provided by a Licensee may be committing a criminal offence".
There is a stern need of strict measures by the telecom regulator, according to a local telecoms expert, to make its law effective.
