Ban on Skype services unfortunate, says, Skype CEO

skypeJosh Silverman, the Chief Executive of the United Arab Emirates has expressed disappointment over UAE's move to block its services in the country which is turning as a hub of global business and commercial activities.

Speaking at a media summit at Abu Dhabi, he said that the company is ready to discuss the matter at any level with the government. Silverman told, "When a government acts to protect a legacy of a profit pool, it's usually not in the interest of the economy or the people."

North Korea is the only country where Skype's World-wide VoIP has been banned while its website is blocked in many countries such as UAE. The Skype software, according to Silverman, can play a vital role in the commercial segment of the country by providing communication to a larger number of immigrants at no or nominal charges.

Mr. Silverman added that Skype is in the interest of the UAE immigrants which accounts for about 85 percent of the UAE's 4.5 million residents.
