Specialists will be appointed by the Northern Territory Health Minister to examine how a man allegedly used fake medical degree to practice at the Alice Springs Hospital as a physician.
Last week, Balaji Varatharaju, 29, was arrested after it was revealed that he had never completed a medical degree, but was working as a trainee for nearly six months, under the supervision of senior doctors.
He was declined bail, when he came to the Alice Springs Magistrates Court on Monday. He is accused of submitting a forged document, making a false statement and possessing poison.
He was pursuing a medical-related science research degree at the University of Adelaide.
According to News Limited, Varatharaju had treated more than 400 patients, but had not adminstered any surgery.
Meanwhile, Health Minister Kon Vatskalis said that an independent assessment will be undertaken by the auditors with the help of a medical professional from Queensland.
"I have already written to the Medical Board asking for a full explanation as to how this occurred, and seeking assurances that an incident such as this does not occur again”, he added.
