‘Metroid: Other M’ is Nintendo’s new installment in one of its mass-appeal science fiction adventure game franchises ‘Metroid.’ Essentially a traditional game with many layers, the ‘Other M’ includes some first-person elements, though it is largely played in third-person 3D.
Developed by Ninja Gaiden maker Team Ninja together with Nintendo, ‘Other M’ - which can be played with the Wii Remote alone - kicks off with a sequence that the aficionados of the ‘Metroid’ series will recognize as the climax of ‘Super Metroid: Samus.’
While the pointing of the Wii remote at the screen make the player automatically move into the first-person mode; the holding of the remote sideways allows the player to move around Samus in third-person mode. The gameplay includes Samus’ encounters with enemies and monsters; and is loaded with elements like jumping, shooting, blowing open doors with missiles, and what not!
Unlike the earlier games in the series, the levels do not restrict the movement of the players within the 2-D plane; rather allows a free movement in all four directions. However, the linear layout of the different levels more or less directs the player’s movements; and the camera is fully controlled by the game.
The demo of the game reveals that Samus, as always, loses her weapons in the beginning itself; though she has an armory of Missiles, Bombs, and the like. The mini-map of the game shows the hidden objects, which the players have to find themselves along their way into the play!
