Yahoo teams up with Twitter for social media integration

yahooIn what can be seen as Yahoo’s pertinent move to salvage some of its lost impetus by venturing into the social networking arena, the company has recently announced a strategic partnership with the popular microblogging site, Twitter.

The Yahoo-Twitter team-up will essentially combine networking outlets and help Yahoo integrate the microblogging site’s feeds into a wide range of its online properties. As such, the nearly 600 million worldwide users of Yahoo will now be able to update their social networks in one simple step, via a Yahoo ID.

Noting that Yahoo, of late, has been “struggling for relevance,” Enderle Group’s chief analyst Rob Enderle said: “Social networking, rather than search, was closer to Yahoo's initial strength, and they lost their way by going after Google. This takes them back to their roots, and does give Yahoo some much needed visibility.”

The Yahoo-Twitter partnership will not only allow Yahoo users to view real-time public Twitter updates when they browse Yahoo’s news, sports, sports and entertainment sites; but will also expand the reach of Twitter’s real-time updates, thereby displaying the value of its service in new settings.

About the far-reaching effect of the Yahoo-Twitter team-up, Twitter’s co-founder Biz Stone said that tweets in more places only bring additional relevance “where and when” users need them most. Stone added that the Yahoo integration will help “information in one single tweet travel light-years farther.”
