IVF leads to higher stillbirth risk

ivfThere are four times more chances of giving birth to a stillborn baby among women who get pregnant through vitro fertilization.

Higher chances of stillbirth were also indicated in women who undergo intracytoplasmic sperm injection, the new study from from Aarhus University Hospital in Denmark found. The researchers however pointed out the risk from both IVF and ISI was still low.

Kirsten Wisborg, who led the study, said, "The results from our study emphasize the need for continuous follow-up of the outcome of fertility treatments so that the information given to infertile couples seeking treatment can be differentiated to their individual circumstances."

Involving about 20,000 pregnancies from August 1989 to October 2006 stated that fertilization treatments might be causing the higher risk rather than infertility itself.

Among those who conceived after IVF/ICSI, the rate of stillbirth was 16.2 per thousand and in those who got pregnant naturally the rate was 3.7 per thousand.
