Blood Test can Detect Cancer in Patients

Blood Test can Detect Cancer in PatientsA recent research on cancer detection, done by the Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center, has unveiled that the doctors can detect cancer recurrence in the patients by a blood test.

The researchers tested the DNA of the tumors in 6 different patients with breast and colon cancer. They were able to trace the cancer in body of the patients. They were also able to determine the effectiveness of the cancer treatment done in patient's body.

"We took six cancers, four colon and two breast cancers and we sequenced their genome", said Dr. Kenneth Kinzler, Johns Hopkins Medical Institute.

The technology will be implemented regularly in a majority of healthcare organizations in the next few years.

"We find changes that are occurring in that cancer that are not occurring in any other cells in their body. We can then look for these changes in samples like blood and determine if there are residual cancer cells still in the patient", said Dr. Kinzler.
