The European Union's new trade Chief, Karel De Gucht has asked for the need to early complete the Doha round of negotiations for concluding the global commerce pact without wasting more time. He visited the World Trade Organization in Geneva on Friday and observed that no sincere efforts are being done for introducing trade liberalization.
After meeting with WTO Chief Pascal Lamy, the EU Chief urged the countries to resolve differences by eliminating trade barriers in agriculture, manufacturing and services. Gucht added, "When there's nothing really moving here then it's because there's not the political will to do so."
Earlier, G-20 nations were at consensus that global economic recovery has been associated with the completion of Doha round launched in 2001 in Qatar's capital but they have yet to take any concrete step to resolve the deadlock. The agreement, already 6 year late in schedule, can do a lot for poverty ridden nations by creating more employment opportunities for masses.
Asking for the need of a strong political will, De Gucht expressed, "To some extent there's a contradiction between the G-20 saying we should have a deal on Doha in 2010 and then those same heads of states and governments not giving the necessary leeway to their minister or their officials."
