All Darfur rebel groups were talked to on Tuesday in Doha, Qatar by the Joint Special Representative of UN/AU Mission in Darfur (UNAMID), Prof. Ibrahim Gambari.
In a statement, UNAMID specified that a meeting with representatives of the groups was conducted by Gambari behind closed doors at the ongoing Doha peace talks on Darfur.
The statement made clear that discussions were carried out by envoy with Justice and Equality Movement (JEM) negotiating team, led by its Chief Mediator, Ahmed Lissan, and the Addis Ababa Roadmap signatories, represented by Dr. Sharif Harir.
The discussions were described as transparent, constructive and promising by UNAMID, which added that all parties displayed commitment to work closely and in a coordinated manner to advance the peace process.
The meeting also aimed at discussing on an array of issues relating to the cooperation between UNAMID and the Darfur movements. Al the parties promised to fasten the political process and enhance cooperation among themselves.
UNAMID explained, "They all commended the constructive role of the State of Qatar and all the efforts aimed at bringing about a lasting and comprehensive peace sooner than later to Darfur. The movements reaffirmed the necessity of a cessation of hostilities in the context of a Framework Agreement, which shall address the root causes of the conflict in Darfur."
The meeting was a grand success as all the parties nodded in yes to work together to ensure that UNAMID implements its mandate and agreed to collectively cope with the challenges and difficulties facing the peace process.
