Expediting its efforts to ensue energy security of the nation, Kuwait signed a nuclear power agreement with France which would provide it the support to develop its civilian nuclear capabilities for peaceful use.
The Amir of Kuwait Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah and French President Nicolas Sarkozy held discussions on February 2009, paving a way for the recent agreement between two nations.
Bernard Bigot, the Head of French Atomic Energy Commission added, "This is the first step of cooperation and to share experience in the nuclear field." He hoped that Kuwait would ensure peaceful use of atomic energy through its recently established Nuclear Energy Commission.
Ahmad Bishara, the Chief of nuclear commission of Kuwait said that country has yet to finalize setting up a nuclear plant in the country for meeting its growing energy needs. The recent deal, which ensures continuous supply of nuclear fuel, technology and equipment, would definitely push its efforts for having nuclear establishments for civilian energy uses.
The members of the Gulf Cooperation Council including Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates have been working on a civilian nuclear program under international safety norms.
