The Health Sciences Authority in Singapore noted that the festive season yields the minimum amount of blood donations in comparison to other months of the year. For the Singaporeans, the season of giving has not been giving as much in one respect.
The month of December- up till 20th of December has registered a collection of mere 6,090 units of blood, the lowest figure in 2009.
The Singapore Red Cross, which is Singapore's National Blood Donor Recruiter, has organized 43 blood mobile drives in December, fewer in comparison to other months of the year because of schools being closed during the festive season.
In a view to solicit people, an encouraging donor Mohammad Othman, 56, said, "It is not painful thing at all, just a small ant bite - that is all. You just relax. Most of all, it is community work you are doing for people. You have nothing to donate; you have yourself, your blood. It's been known that blood is very valuable to those who donate". In accordance to the Singapore Red Cross, a regular blood donor can donate three to four times annually.
The current collection undermines the daily requirement of 250 to 300 units of blood of the hospitals in Singapore. Looking at surging demand for blood in the country, regular blood donors need to be increased, from one to two per cent of its population by 2010.
