UAE expedites food security efforts

The UAE government is planning to ensure a three-month food reserve in a bid to further strengthen the food security of the country. United Arab Emirates' Minister Sultan bin Saeed Al Mansouri said that strategic stock of 15 commodities is under consideration which would be able to handle food crisis and disaster for three months period.

The minister said, "The strategy will establish an early warning system for crises and disasters that may affect national food security in the country, and build a stock of 15 commodities that covers three months in the first phase."

The Emirates news agency (WAM) said that the concerned department has been asked to chalk out plans for devising a food security policy which is expected to be submitted to the federal cabinet very soon.

Food prices are souring in UAE in line with rising food inflation across the globe. The minister said that food prices may further jump in upcoming period and it would remain as a major challenge for the government to arrest soaring food prices.
