As per recent reports, a recently concluded study, which has been made available in the recent edition of the journal Diabetologia, it has been revealed that the peril of birth defects tends to spike up four-fold in case the pregnant mother is suffering from diabetes.
The reports were based on findings gathered by the researchers who analyzed in excess of 400,000 pregnancies that took place in the north-east of Britain, and the analysis helped researchers conclude that the menace of birth defects, including the likes of various life-threatening defects such as spina bifida and congenital heart disease, tend to increase if the expecting mum is suffering from some form of cancer.
Already, it has been recommended by national guidelines that a woman must have sound direct control on blood sugar levels ahead of deciding to conceive.
During the course of study, which was carried out by researchers from the Newcastle University, in excess of 401,149 pregnancies that took place in the region during 1996 and 2008 were analyzed on various aspects. Out of all pregnancies studied by the researchers, it was claimed that in excess of 1,677 expecting mums were suffering from diabetes.
While expressing her opinion regarding the findings of the study, along with mentioning the consequences it might have in the real world in the time to follow, the lead author of the study from the Newcastle University, Dr. Ruth Bell, said: “Many of these anomalies happen in the first four to six weeks. It is a problem when the pregnancy is not intended or when people are not aware they need to talk to their doctors before pregnancy”.
She further added that the number of pregnancies including pitiable sugar control was in fact more than believed earlier.
