It has been revealed that many Asian countries have put a ban on the import of all poultry items from Victoria. The Australian Chicken Meat Federation told that Vietnam, Singapore, and Hong Kong have stopped taking poultry products from Victoria. However, Japan is the only country, which has denied taking any of the products from Australia.
Victorian poultry farmers said that they are not shocked to see such a reaction from Asian countries and feel that the ban would continue for next three to six months. The Victorian Chicken Meat Council's Alan Wilson told the news was not shocking, but they found the banning to be an overreaction from their side.
Wilson told that they send out those meat items which are generally being used in pet food and in some other things. Banning the items was somehow an overreaction, said Wilson, who further that the ban is not going to disrupt the business of other industries such as wheat, sugar, rice and fruits.
The reports further revealed that the ban from the Asian countries have come some days after the authorities concerned quarantined two poultries in Melbourne in the wake of bird flu. Not only this, it has also been revealed that more than 20,000 ducks have been culled and vaccines are being given to sterilize the virus from spreading.
Dr. Hugh Millar, the state's Chief Veterinary Officer, said that the reaction from other countries was expected and any country would do the same to avert the risk. However, the authorities concerned are working hard to eliminate all the factors which could lead to virus spread.
Victorian Deputy Premier Peter Ryan also said the same that they have been doing their best to get free from this problem as they do not want to disrupt their domestic and international business.
