The population of Auckland has reached 1.5 million with help of Ramonah Patience Toomalatai, who is just seven-and-a-half hours old. The baby girl is said to be the third child to her parents, Sulia and Tutasi, who have made a history soon after her birth.
The baby girl was born at the Middlemore Hospital. At the time of birth, she weighed 4.3kg. Her mother was about to deliver the baby when midwife Ady Priday informed her that her baby was being considered to be the 1.5 millionth citizen of Auckland.
It has been informed that the Middlemore Maternity Unit is considered as one of the largest in the country as it helps in delivering 6,900 children every year.
The Mayor of Auckland, Len Brown, was reported saying: “[Auckland is] growing at a real pace and a reminder to us with a new birth that we need to be really planning for the future to get our transport right, to invest in this city so that it becomes… most livable city”.
It was decided by authorities that the tag of the 1.5 millionth citizen of Auckland would be given to a baby and to a migrant. Auckland is now considered as the fifth largest city in Australasia. Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, and Perth all are among the top five highest population countries.
It is estimated that by 2031, the population of Auckland would cross 2 million. After 13 months, the census is scheduled to take place. The last year’s census was called off because of the February 22 quake. As the population of the city is growing at a rapid pace, the authorities need to make sure that they do provide adequate services to the residents. Len Brown has promised bringing significant changes before long.
