Study Links Lower Body Weight at Birth to Autism Risk

AutismA recent study has found that low weight of infant at the time of birth can trigger autism. In the past few years, researchers have been conducted a number of studies on the large scale to understand autism.

However, a recent study has claimed that low body weight can be a contributory factor in triggering autism. For the study, the researchers studied twins; one was affected with autism while the other was not.

It was found that the child suffering from autism had lower body weight at the time of birth. The lead author of the study, said, “Our study of discordant twins -- twin pairs in which only one twin was affected by ASD -- found birth weight to be a very strong predictor of autism spectrum disorder”.

Autism is a disease in which a child finds it hard to socialize and also finds it difficult to concentrate in studies. The disease is caused by a number of reasons, including environmental and genetic disorder. It is for the very first time when the researchers have blamed poor body weight for causing autism.

For the study, the researchers studied 3,725 same-sex twin pairs. The study was conducted Paul Lichtenstein of Sweden’s Karolinska Institute. Autism is a developmental disorder which affects the brain of developing children.

If the disorder is gauged at a right time, then there are chances of it being cured. However, the disease is hard to cure when discovered later. In many cases, parents are not even aware that their child is suffering from autism. Therefore, it is necessary for them to keep a tab on the activities of their children. Besides, school can also play a significant role in detecting autism disorder in students.
