Unsafe Abortions on the Rise: New Global Analysis

AbortionsMaking an immensely dreadful disclosure, a recently concluded study, which was carried out by researchers from the Guttmacher Institute in New York, has claimed that the frequency of unsafe abortions is rapidly increasing all over the world.

The international study, which was supported by the World Health Organization (WHO), claimed that rate after a period of considerable decline in the rate of unsafe abortions all over the world, it has again started showing an upward trend.

During 2003 and 2008, the rate of abortion out of every 1,000 women in their childbearing age (15 to 44) displayed a modest fluctuation, from 29 to 28 out of every 1,000 women. However, the frequency of unsafe abortions increased massively from 44% recorded in the year 1995 to more than 49% in 2008.

While expressing her concern regarding the rapidly increasing number of unsafe abortions in the region, the lead author of the study and senior researcher at New York’s Guttmacher Institute, Dr. Gilda Sedgh, said: “The stall in the abortion rate coincides with a plateau in the level of contraceptive use, which had been increasing in prior years. Before the abortion rate stalled, it was declining, and contraceptive use was increasing”.

In addition, it was revealed that more and more abortions are getting unsafe these days mainly because of a rapid rise in the number of abortions taking place in the modern day scenario.

Scientists claimed that the statistics revealed by their research is based on various official statistics, national surveys, research papers as well as hospital records from all over the world.

Regardless of the decrease in the rate of abortion on a whole, the actual count of abortions taking place has increased rapidly from 41.6 million recorded in 2003 to around 43.8 million recorded by a similar survey conducted in
2008. The researchers have mainly associated it to an increasing in the overall population of the world.
