WHO Praises India for Its Polio-Free Crusade

PolioThere is no second though that polio is a scar on the face of any nations around the world and that is why so much is being said about the same all the time. Even the World Health Organization (WHO) has not left any stone unturned to ensure that all possible efforts are being made to limit the impact of the disease which affects young kids across the world. However, a recent report has certainly given a sigh of relief as there is not even a single case reported in India in the last one year and this is by far the longest delay.

This report is being given the desired level of importance and seen as a positive sign towards the complete eradication of the scar sooner or later. Even the WHO has dubbed this achievement as "India's greatest public health achievement”, thereby making it clear that they are expecting other polio-endemic countries, including Afghanistan, Nigeria and Pakistan, to make such results.

“India's success is arguably its greatest public health achievement and has provided a global opportunity to push for the end of polio”, said the WHO's Director-General Margaret Chan, while making it clear that India has made a huge step ahead in addressing the concern.

Nonetheless, efforts are being made in all possible forms, including the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, to ensure that this disease could be completely rooted out. There is need for other countries to learn lessons from India so that a polio-free nation can be built. India had seen a drop of 94% in polio cases in 2010 and there are expectations that the figure would go down further in the coming years.

There are reports that indicate that Poliovirus has travelled to many countries from India to countries like Angola, Lebanon, Tajikistan, Bangladesh and Namibia, and this is what makes it even more important to extend the desired level of attention else there could be some dire consequences in store.
