Internet Can Become an Addiction, May Affect Health

Internet-AddictionReports say that internet can cause people to get addicted to it, which might not include physical obsession but can lead to alteration in brain structure as caused by drinking alcohol and drugs. The reason why it makes us addicted is the involvement in a certain type of an activity on it, researchers have revealed.

However, the addiction is not physical but it can occur in few as well as more usage of internet can be the cause of unhealthy psychological functioning, say researchers. Also, physical addiction, if occurs, can lead the drinkers on the way of quitting their habit, to relapse into drinking.

A revolutionary study was conducted by a team of researchers, who used MRI scanners to find out the changes in the brains of young people who were used to spending hours on the internet. The root cause of people’s addiction to internet was found to be involvement in some or other activity, which rewards them with an irrational behaviour.

A few of the major activities that fall in this category comprise gambling, gaming and pornography. The people spend multiple hours in these kinds of activities and affect their life as well as relationships and sometimes may even lead them to get into an illegal activity. The analysis found out that many of them were fond of playing games, thus, forgetting to eat or drink anything for several hours. Consequently, their health, education and personal lives suffer.

"The limitations of this study are that it is not controlled, and it's possible that illicit drugs, alcohol or other caffeine-based stimulants might account for the changes. The specificity of 'internet addiction disorder' is also questionable", said Professor Michael Farrell, who is the Director of the National Drug and Alcohol Research Centre in the University of New South Wales, Australia.
