A research that took place at the Victoria University has revealed that video game players who play more than 33 hours a week are an easy prey of depression and anxiety. Video gaming researcher Daniel Loton said that the findings are preliminary and a lot more needs to be studied.
In order to reach at the above level, a global study was conducted in which certain factors were taken to assess the effect of video gaming on an individual, depending on the time he spends playing it.
Some of the factors were comparison of academic results among excessive video game players and balanced game players, handling of relationships and physical and mental health. As per the study, excessive video game player is the one who plays for 33 hours and more in a week, while a balanced player is the one who plays for not more than 21 hours a week.
Though no negative effect was seen in the academic results of excessive game players, they get depressed easily even on trivial issues and they could not handle family issues. There is reason for it, said Loton.
He affirmed that excessive game players are often indulged in playing and their maximum time gets spent while doing that only. They are not much exposed to real life challenges or are not an active participant to solve those issues.
This is the reason that when excessive video game players come across such issues they are not able to handle them, and either they get depressed or take out their anger on other person.
But Loton said it should not be considered the final findings as they still need to assess that whether these people have depression and anxiety issues from beginning or they have developed it while they started playing video games.
