A Chinese couple defies family planning rules by having eight children

A Chinese couple defies family planning rules by having eight childrenChina, the world’s most populous country, has long been encouraging its citizens to have only one child but the rich have found a surprising way to defy the one-child rule.

A Chinese couple from Guangzhou admitted that it managed to have four boys and four girls. The couple spent around one million Yuan ($200,000) and unlawfully enlisted two surrogate mothers to have eight children.

The real mother gave birth to only two babies, while each of the two unlawfully enlisted surrogate mothers gave birth to three babies.

The revelation raised questions on the Chinese, which instructs couples to have only one child.

In addition, the revelation symbolizes a bold rebelliousness to the country’s family planning rules.

Demography expert Liang Zhongtang from the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences, said, “People are interested in the policy these days and the need for changes to it. A lot of people think it should have been dropped a long time ago, or relaxed at least.”

Guangzhou Health Department officials didn’t reveal the name of the mother. They only said that they were investigating the case.
