It seems that the scar of vine-killing bacteria has attacked Rotorua's altitude, as there are reports that indicated that two kiwifruit orchards are affected by the same. So far, the bacteria has been found in most of the orchards in New Zealand.
The two affected orchards are told to be not major commercial growers, but still all desired level of protection would be taken. “Rotorua is probably well-suited for Psa-V as the bacteria likes cold, wet conditions. We've found orchards at a higher altitude or with higher rainfall are more susceptible”, said Kiwifruit Vine Health General Manager John Burke, who has confirmed the presence of the bacteria.
The affected orchards are told to produce green variety of kiwifruit. So far, in the last on year, Psa-V has affected orchards in Tauranga, Katikati, Waihi, Whakatane and Opotiki and many more are being affected by the same. It has been known that the bacteria spreads through wind, rain and plant material, and if not being given the desired level of attention, there are chances that it could wipe out the growth of kiwi fruit.
Looking at the speed at which the bacteria is spreading, there are fears that it could be devastating. Voices are heard that significant attention needs to be paid to track the symptoms of the infection so that it can be curbed at right point of time.
However, reports have also confirmed that there is no threat of the PSA vine disease to a kiwifruit orchard from the process of girdling that is done to stimulate the production of the fruit. It has been confirmed from Kiwifruit Vine Health that there is need to ensure that girdling is done in fine weather and a protective spray is being applied once the process is over. There is need for growers to avoid any open wound on a vine which could escalate the risk of bacteria to significant level.
