Online Shopping Portals Reports Surge in Traffic for Cyber Monday

Experts had pegged that this year's holiday season will see a marked surge in online shopping, something that has been proved right by the very latest Cyber Monday sale that was held by all major online retailers as well as online divisions of major retail stores. Online shopping sites reported a rise both in sales as well as traffic, but while shoppers poured in large numbers, they did not spend all that much.

By 6.30 pm EST, online shoppers had reportedly spent about 11% more than they did a year ago around the same time, as confirmed by official figures from Coremetrics Inc., a Web analytics company. Coremetrics tracks behavior of shoppers on official websites of over 500 American brands.

Shoppers were, however, more attracted towards steep discounts and tended to spread out their purchases, the average size of every sales ticket had "slipped nearly 14% from last year".

Various online retailers reported record high sales on Monday alone, with handbags seller EBags Inc., registering, as of 5 pm on Monday, a 55.5% hike in sales as compared to last year. The retailer's official site was offering 20% of all purchases and free shipping for shoppers who shelled out over $100.

Experts are now of the opinion that Cyber Monday is well on its way to become that biggest and most profitable day for online stores. comScore Inc. has estimated that sales for this day could grow almost 6% and set a new single day earnings record of over $900 Million.
